I have a family. Sometimes I even see them.

Saturday was awesome.  The weather is awesome.  I haven't run all this week, though, and between lack of activity and excitedly anticipating this, I'm jumping out of my skin. Seriously.  I could fill up a blog obsessing about LBL.  My first 24 hour adventure race.  My first race as an official Team Virtus member.  In 9 more days.

Saturday was pretty much spent in drive - ride - drive, though we did have a nice dinner out.  I didn't even fall asleep in my Chinese food, and despite losing an hour to daylight savings time, I actually woke up well rested on Sunday.  Jeff had the brilliant idea to go to the zoo, so we had breakfast and then took off.

It really was brilliant.  St. Louis has a great zoo, but it's packed on nice weekend days.  Sunday was not a particularly nice weekend day.  It was gray, a little chilly, and rainy.  Perfect for keeping the crowds away!

We parked near Turtle Park, so of course we had to stop there and climb around.

I'm king of the turtle

After climbing around, we headed over to the zoo.  We saw a bunch of animals, and of course had to go into the penguin house, which is breathtakingly stenchy.

Jeff had us standing right under a hole in the roof with rain dripping down on us.

I think there's some kind of rule that you must get your picture taken on this gorilla

Thinker
We had a good couple hours wandering around before the weather got colder and the rain started falling in earnest, and then we headed home.

Camels are nasty.
Between training and work and school, I'm gone a lot, so it was really nice to get some time to hang out with a couple of my guys.  Maybe next time the older boys will be home, too, and we can all go somewhere together...

  2. Looks like a great day Kate! We do have a fantastic zoo. Love the pictures!

One question. Do you sleep at all during a 24 hour race or keep moving the entire time?

  3. Been ages since I've been to the zoo (and we usually head to the one in St. L instead of KC even though we are about in the middle). I'm not familiar with the turtle park so I'll have to find that when we go this spring. Definitely smart to be there on a dreary day with less crowds. Maybe I'll head over there during Easter break (which due to lack of snow days we actually GET this year). Looks like an awesome family day. LOVED that shot with your boy in the turtle's mouth. Hilarious.

  4. I love this! The zoo is one of our favorite places to spend time together. We have some very nice zoos and game reserves here. Balancing family life between work and training is so important.

  6. LOVE the deadly tortoise pic!!...and I might have been a little nervous to put my back to that camel in the bottom picture. I remember being at a wildlife place once and my mom was posing for a picture and goat game up behind her and start chewing on her hair!

  7. Love the zoo! How exciting that your big race is so near. I think all your races are big but this one is really big! Do you live near it or is it a travel race too?

It has turned nasty and cold here because I complained it was too warm! "There, take that AJH who dressed like it was yesterday."

  8. It looks like a zoo where the animals have their spaces and are not in jail. By the pictures I see how fun was for Jeff that day.
    Great pictures.

  9. The one good thing about my injury has been seeing more of my family on Saturday mornings. Tomorrow we're going hiking--if I can't run, damnit, I'm hiking.

I'm excited for your big 24 hour adventure!!
